ISDN
This Integrated Services Digital Network offers 64 kilobits per second per channel (128 and 256 kbps in most common configurations). There has been an implementation of Narrowband ISDN but Broadband ISDN has not yet been widely implemented. Timing has been a major problem with the advent of ISDN. Getting it out too slow means that other technologies will be pursued and may even outperform ISDN. This is why many people refer to ISDN as I Still Don't kNow.
Cable Companies
Cable modems promise 10-megabit-per-second transfer rates.
There is still much work to be done in terms of infrastructure. Cable has traditionally only been used for one-way communication but proposing two-way communication will cause some problems. Furthermore, it is a shared bandwidth system which means it is prone to bottlenecks...basically we'll all choke if everybody turns to cable modems.
